Hi,I just need your opinion and input.Do students these days seemingly need a quick fix, education~wise? Is that why online schooling and technical schools seem to be so popular? Are the days of living in a dorm room, pledging fraternities and taking Basket-Weaving 101 a thing of the past?Hello and welcome to Brainmass today! This is a very good question with no one answer to it, unfortunately. It really depends on who the student is and his/her situation. The younger student just out of high school is still packing colleges across the globe in order to experience the hard work and social life that it has to offer. It is easy for him/her to do so considering he/she is young and most likely does not have children or a spouse to support. I honestly do not think, even with our recession, that any colleges are suffering dwindling admissions, so there is still a high demand for the traditional college life. However, there is the adult population who, through circumstances such as dead-end jobs or unemployment, decide to return back to school to change careers. With having adult responsibilities such as a family to support and mortgages to pay, these people are the ones who are most likely to look for a quick fix in an education. My brother was unemployed a few years ago and had a degree in communications (which was not helping him find a job). He went back to a technical school and received job training in less than six-months, and today he is doing quite well in his new career. He made jokes along the way about finding something quick so his grandchildren do not have to wheel him down the aisle in a wheel chair at graduation. He had a point in saying this too. Older people do not have the time to invest to go back to school, and those faced with needing to update skills or try something new will look to a quick fix. This, of course, is why online schools remain so popular. There are also students who did average to borderline in high school but need some type of higher education in order to have a good career. These students are not really college material as they probably would do poorly and drop out within a semester or two. Sending them to a technical school to learn to style hair or to train them to be an electrician is a great option as well as a quick fix to aid them in their careers. As you can see, it would honestly depend on the student and his/her circumstances. I do not think that all students are looking for a quick educational fix, but there are a good number of them who are. However, traditional colleges are still very popular and continue to grow. As we talked about above, there is still a huge demand for traditional college educations among the population, especially the younger population who begs to move into a dorm room or fraternity and have the traditional college experience. I honestly believe that it will never be a thing of the past. However, with more and more adults returning back to school for some type of job retraining, it may seem as though these things are becoming a fond memory of the past. This is just because there are more students in higher education situations. Yet, in reality, dorm rooms are still overflowing and cake-classes are still filling up within minutes of being posted! There is no fear of this being a thing of the past.I hope this helps! Thank you for using Brainmass today.
