Hi Just need you input with these 2 DQs.What personal characteristics might make you a good coach or mentor?
What is your understanding of the phrase walking the talk? Provide examples. What personal characteristics might make you a good coach or mentor? This is a very good question! First and foremost, a good mentor needs to lead by example, and this means that he/she should practice what he preaches. A good mentor will not only tell you what the best approach is, but is utilizing the approach himself. (Six Qualities of a Good Mentor). A good coach/mentor should also lead by example and be willing to share his/her skills, knowledge, and expertise with people without expecting anything in return. He or she should also be an outstanding citizen with integrity and the genuine desire to help others. As well, good mentors/coaches are good at listening and provides guidance and constructive feedback in order to foster learning. His or her good example should motivate others so that they are inspired to set goals. What can you add to this? What characteristics do you think would make a good mentor? Do you have a mentor (or had one) that inspired you to continue though school and be the success that you are today? These are all things that you can discuss when you formulate your response. What is your understanding of the phrase walking the talk? Provide examples. For this one, I did not need to use a source for this. However, if you need one, please let me know and I will try to find one for you!Walking the talk comes from a quote you can talk the talk, but can you walk the talk? Basically this means that people needs to do what they say and not make empty promises. For example, if I promised that I would help you with your homework today but instead I went out shopping. Therefore, I did not walk the talk because I made you an empty promise and did not come though in the end. Perhaps you had a big exam that you really needed help with and I let you down. This, on a grander scale, was a horrible thing for me to do to you especially for something as shallow as going to the mall. I actually had that happen to me the day of a very important final exam. I was supposed to receive help for something that I was not sure of that I thought might be on the exam, but the person (who promised to help me) stood me up. The entire exam, as it turned out, was on this one subject and needless to say, I did not do very well on it! Had this person just took ten minutes of her life to explain one simple concept to me, I would have aced it. If you are considering this in the mentor/coach capacity, it is important to understand that when you are in this position, you have people looking up to you for guidance and support. If you make a promise to them and do not carry through with it, then you are not a very good mentor or coach because you are supposed to lead by example and you let people down.
