What is fear? What do you fear most? It would be inappropriate if any of us were to claim
that he or she does not have a certain predisposition towards a particular aversion. Phobia
refers to an extreme fear towards someone or something that often cannot be explained in a
rational or logical manner. There have been attempts by scholars and researchers to try and
understand a phobia, but there have not been general conclusions on the topic as it has been
marred by the evolving nature of human behavior that has made phobia as a concept to be
rather interpreted from an individual perspective rather than as a generalizable concept.
There have been various reasons that have been found culpable for causation of phobia. It
would be important to note that phobia exists in two kinds: simple and complex phobia.
There is no much difference in the causes of the two types of phobia, but simple phobia can
be inherited. The implication is that if a child is aware that a parent has an inclination towards
a particular phobia, the child is likely to develop the phobia. It has also been found to be
caused by childhood experiences. If one experiences an unpleasant event while as a child,
there is a high likelihood that the person will develop a phobia to the experience in adulthood.
A complex phobia is still in scholarly limbo as the scholars have discovered that they are not
caused by a particular event but rather a combination of experiences, the cognitive aspects,
and the genetics. They are also referred to as social phobias, and research should continue to
have clarity on these phobias (Brown, Hermberg & Juster, 2005).
Cognitive behavior therapy is one of the best-known ways of treating phobia. It involves
exposure to the phobia by a professional but in a controlled environment. The aim of this
process is to decondition the people with the phobia and also help reduce the anxiety they
encounter when they get exposed to the phobia. It is intended to gradually eliminate the
negative thoughts, the dysfunctional beliefs and the negative responses towards the fear. The
method has been made better by the introduction of technology that has made a simulation of
the phobic environment quite easier to the people seeking medication. The other treatment
method is by the use of drugs. There are anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs that help in
reducing the physical and emotional fear individuals face when faced by their phobia.
Phobia affects personalities in different ways. First, the phobia can make individual to have a
problem with self-esteem. The implication is that a person has exposure to being vulnerable
to the particular phobia he or she is exposed to. As a matter of fact, most individuals with a
phobia are unaware of how a phobia affects them, and it only becomes evident when exposed
to the phobia. A phobia can also make a personality have a secluded life due to the fear of the
unknown. Panic attacks are common to individuals with phobia when caught in a moment of
inattention, and this can make them resort to isolation to avoid such moments. Agoraphobia,
for instance, makes an individual fear open spaces and this could lead the people to have
limited interactions and expose them to panic attacks. Such is the seriousness of phobia.
Some medical clinics treat phobia in the US, and they include the Anxiety and Phobia
Treatment Center Medical Clinic in White Plains, New York and the New York-Presbyterian
Treatment for Anxiety among others.
Conclusively, phobia needs to be treated due to the far-reaching consequences it has on an
individual especially the complex phobia. It affects a person’s personality, and there are
renowned medical centers in the US that can help treat phobia.
