ADVANCED BUSINESS LOGISTICS

Business logistics deals with the coordination of the procurement, movements of goods
and storage. These goods being moved may be in the form of raw materials and finished goods.
Business logistics is aimed at reducing the costs of the activity. The movements in goods in an
organization could either be inbound or outbound. Business logistics is a larger activity than
distribution management (Chew, Lee & Tang, 2011). Business logistics is inclusive of
forecasting procurement and management of distribution activities. Business logistics has
undergone changes in the previous years and it is expected that there will be other changes that
will take place in the future. The changes in business logistics trend is facilitated by a number of
factors. The paper is focused at examining the advanced business logistics and the facilitators of
the advancements.
In the past, business logistics dealt with procurement, maintaining and transporting of
products and services from one place to the other. In the past, logistics was only experienced in
the military field where weapons were transported to different parts of the world during the war.
There were only a few research and business people who took into consideration issue of costs
that were associated with logistics. A few authors were in the front line discussing the issue of
companies considering the effects that costs associated with the logistics impacted on their
general performance and profits of the company (Zanjirani, Asgari & Davarzani, 2009).
Organizations found that it was important to have the issue of costs looked into when embarking
on the logistics to ensure that there is saving of costs in the supply chain activity. During the
early business periods, logistics was done through fragmentation of the firm activities. However,
it was later found that there was the need of foregoing the fragmentation since there was the
lowering of the total logistics costs, focuses on specific areas by the top management and sets a
controllable structure by the organizational management.

After some time in the business organizations, physical distribution was made an
important factor to be put into consideration in the issue of logistics. Physical distribution
involved different activities that were coordinated in the logistics activity. Logistics today is
inclusive of all activities of transporting both the unfinished and finished products to and from a
manufacturing plant or organization (Wang & Koh, 2010). There are different factors that have
led to the advancement of business logistics. The most important thing is to understand that
business logistics has changed to becoming better and more suitable for organizations.
Additionally, business logistics advancements has resulted into saving of costs by different
organizations. Some of the factors that have led to advancements of logistics include:

Technology –the current business environment requires that every organization has the
ability of making the necessary changes that will make it remain viable in the industry
within which it operates. Through technology, there are other advanced measures that are
applied in making the aspect of logistics better and more effective for a business
organization. For instance, cellular technology has faced different changes which have
resulted into its advancement (Dwivedi & Clarke, 2013). Cellular technology has assisted
organizations in getting real time view of how activities are carried out. Additionally,
when business organizations take technology into use and adopt new ways of carrying
their business operations, there will be the experience of business performance as it
becomes easy to monitor all the logistics activities of an organization. On the other hand,
through technology, business organizations have managed to implement management
systems that will help control the movement of products.

Availability of devices that control procurement and logistics activities- in the past,
devices that were used in controlling business activities, were not available as they were
expensive. However, in today’s business environment the devices are cheap thus every
organization can have them (Innovative Computing and Information: 1. 2011). On the
other hand, the business organizations have gained the ability to monitor and control
movement of goods and services in and out of the organization.

Change in consumer preferences- consumers have also changed their preferences
significantly and want to have better products which are of quality. This is facilitated by
the fact that customers want to have the value of money which they spend. They also
want to be satisfied with the products and services that are offered to them by different
organizations (Chew, Lee & Tang, 2011). As a result, businesses have adopted logistic
strategies that will ensure that the customer needs are met. Business logistic has thus
stopped focusing on the source and destination of products but the quality of what is
being shipped from one place to the other taking into consideration the cost incurred.

Competition- business organizations have faced competition that has led to discovering
of new ways of performing activities in the organization. For example, when an
organization operates in the fast food industry will have to cope with the competition
which is stiff in the industry. As a result, business organizations will have to make
changes in their systems such as in the logistics system (Zanjirani, Asgari & Davarzani,
2009). On the other hand, there will be the need of acting to counter the competition
through the adaptation of cost effective procedures.

In the present day, logistics is commonly referred to as supply chain management. The use
of supply chain management in business organization is adopted as it seems to have a better way
of managing all the activities that are associated with procurement and logistics. Supply chain
management aims at controlling and monitoring all the activities involved in the transportation of
goods to and from the organization (Wang & Koh, 2010). When all the activities involved in the
transfer of goods both finished and unfinished, it will be possible to reduce the costs that will be
involved. There is a need of having coordinated activities in the transfer process to ensure that
there is the reduction of shipping costs. Logistics is one of the many activities that are involved
in supply chain management. The today’s business organizations logistics involves planning
implementation controlling and forwarding goods from an organization. On the other hand, the
activities of storing and related information at every point of the organization forms part of the
business logistics.
Based on the current business trends, there is always a need to uphold and adapt logistics
methods that will enable a company to grow from one level to the other. On the other hand,
business logistics measures that are incorporative of advanced technologies have proved to be
more successful in monitoring of business activities and operations as compared to the old
methods. When a business organization has applied the right measures that are required in
logistics, the company has the ability of saving its costs while improving its performance and
monitoring the process of procurement and logistics (Dwivedi & Clarke, 2013). On the other
hand, logistics is applied as a way of reducing the amount of lost goods, destruction of goods and
inappropriate handling of goods. When this is done, companies have the ability of making
improvements in its performance as employees become responsible.

Advanced business logistics have facilitated the adoption of advanced technology by
companies as they aim to keep at pace with the competition present in the business environment.
The advancements are facilitated by the needs that keep arising from customers as well as the
entire business organizations. On the other hand, advancements in the business logistics have
enabled organizations to reduce the amounts of money spent in replacing stolen, lost and
damaged goods (Innovative Computing and Information: 1. 2011). When advancements are
made appropriately, the business organizations become easy to control by the top management as
all the employees are responsible for the duties that are allocated to them. Additionally, the
organizations have the ability of improving their performance through proper handling of
products that are delivered by the company and the suppliers as well.
In conclusion, advancements in business logistics have resulted from various factors that
have pushed organizations to make the necessary changes. The advanced business logistics have
resulted into organizations adopting new technologies that are advanced and more efficient in
performing business activities (Chew, Lee & Tang, 2011). On the other hand, business logistics
have advanced to ensure that the needs of the customers are met. Companies that have advanced
their logistics have also managed to make improvements in their performance and remained at
the top of competition in the industries within which they operate. Technology is the main
facilitator of advancements in business logistics. The success of a logistic system that is
advanced is the ability of a company to incorporate it in its operations effectively.
